It’s 3-14, Happy Pi Day!

That’s right kids it’s 3-14 which means it is Pi Day today! Since not everyone has a wonderfully talented wife like mine I figured I would share this picture of the Apple π she made, proving once and for all that ours is an appreciation both of pastries and of puns. How could a blogger not embrace this geekiest of holidays?

But what is a holiday without holiday music? Ask me that around Xmas time and I’ll say “better”. Today however I’ll embrace the concept and share some Pi Day Carols with you. First of all from TeachPi.Org, a website I advise to all of you educators out there, comes this little ditty:

Ludolph The Mathematician
(to the tune of Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer)

We know Einstein and Euclid and Sir Isaac Newton
Lifelong devotions there ain’t no disputin’
But do you recall…
The most tireless one of them all?

Ludolph the Mathematician
Had a special thing for Pi
He made it his life’s mission
To help the number specify

All of his fellow teachers
Never understood his plan
To unlock the number’s magic
By calculating it by hand!

Then in 1599,
Ludolph set his goal…
I’ll find digit 35
With geometry as my guide!

Then how the math world loved him
All his hard work helped them see

Ludolph the Mathematician
You’ll go down in history!

(Learn more about Ludolph van Ceulen here.)

I don’t know about you, but I’d prefer something more modern like Pi Diddy’s math-hop tune tune Lose Yourself in the Digits:

And now, since I am still basically still laid up sick I think it is time to pull out one of my favorite films, Darrin Aronfski’s π and get comfy on the couch. If haven’t seen it you should, it is a tour de force and fiercely intelligent to boot! Heres the trailer to close our Pi Day Festivities out:

Happy Pi Day from CincyVoices, go get yourself a slice!
